On Our Own

August 31, 2007 is a special day. Not only is my nephew Andrew celebrating the day of his birth (I saw his birth; he was the buffest little baby boy I ever saw) but today marks the official last day of my husband’s role as employee.

Beginning Tuesday, he is officially Carpet Master, which replaces his former title of Fashion Buff Man (Able to dress for every occasion at a moments notice…flexing big muscles is a single...). As Carpet Master of Collins Flooring, he joins the ranks of the Self-Employed.

This has been an exhilarating, terrifying ride and it goes on. It’s amazing how many government officials and other greedy persons require a piece of our financial pie (apparently the freshly minted confection is an especially favored dessert for the State of California which has fees just for looking at a dollars).

Our beloved van, which we pinned all our carpet –toting hopes on, was declared DOA at Leon’s this week. This sent us into a bit of a panic since our starting date was only days (little, tiny, short days) away. We made a flurry of phone calls to car dealerships (Note to self: do not give car dealers your home phone number) and a series of frantic visits to car lots under the cover of darkness (when car salesmen voodoo is least effective) in a desperate attempt to find a vehicle.

Other than Wormwood’s Used Cars (where the bumpers are glued on with Super Sticky Gloo and the tanks are filled with sawdust so they will purr like kittens) we found nothing that we could reasonably take on.

I did suggest that Dave rent a u-haul for a couple days, but then promptly put the kibosh on that by imagining him driving it. If I hadn’t laughed out loud, he might have gone for it.

Fortunately, at the midnight hour, a good friend (and our former employer) made us an offer we couldn’t refuse and we will soon be in possession of our very own flooring van! W
e are so grateful! I think the dents and dings make it look like a well-used tool. Customers will know this van has been in the business for awhile and hopefully will assume Dave has too (It’s not his fault he still looks like he’s twenty-five…the jerk).

Now we can get some sleep. Until the next crisis. Or bill.

Wow! God is so good. That is so cool that you got a van...and from a former employer (says a lot about you guys).

You write so well...it's fun to read. Thanks for starting again.

Oh, I got Sense and Sensibility on DVD this week at Target for $4.88 (sorry, I'm a deal finder). I waited years and years, because I have it on VHS and couldn't stand to spend the money they wanted for it. I suppose it pays to be patient. Oh, and it's widescreen, too...can't wait to watch it!
